I hope you enjoyed your Nov 2013 GCE A-Level H2 Chemistry Exam (code: 9647) Paper 2 (Structured Questions & Planning) yesterday.
Quick observations of yesterday’s Paper 2:
1) Cambridge examiners tested a lot of fundamental concepts & key definitions. For those that focused alot on the basic fundamentals, i guess you should be smiling from ear to ear.
2) Most of the questions are quite direct and not much inter-topic linking.
3) Not much questions tested was based on calculations.
The more difficult question would probably be the Planning Question (12 marks with 5.0% weighting) which was a surprise. I think no one would have guessed that the topic will be based on ‘Transition Metals‘. Heard that many JC lecturers and Chemistry tutors from other learning centers are very disappointed because they went to spot ‘Energetics‘ and ‘Organic Chemistry‘ to be the topic for Planning question, and spend a lot of time with their students on it. Unfortunately, we will never be able to spot the topic in Planning Question! H2 Biology students might have some advantage as they were were put through rigorous training to prepare Standard Solutions, etc. which was asked in this question. Some of my H2 Chemistry students in fact find this question tedious (BUT easy!). Hope you are also one of them.
Based on Paper 2, we would probably EXPECT the following for tomorrow’s Paper 3 (Free Response Questions):
1) High percentage of questions involving calculations i.e. topics such as:
- Atoms, Molecules & Stoichiometry
- The Gaseous State
- Chemical Energetics (although Gibbs Free Energy – Spontaneity came out in a question worth a few marks ONLY)
- Electrochemistry (IMPT! Might have a lot of marks on this topic)
- Chemical Equilibria
- Ionic Equilibria (IMPT! Might have a lot of marks on this topic)
- Reaction Kinetics
2) Each question to be heavily inter-linked by several topics. Get ready to apply! You need to switch between topics very quickly.
3) More application type questions that require you to think out-of-the-box!
Be ready mentally and emotionally.
All the Best to your H2 Chemistry Paper 3!
May the force be with you!
